Four prompts that keep it honest

Run them in order in one chat. Replace the text in brackets with your own.

1. Pull out what the job really asks for

Here is a job description. List the 8 most important requirements, using the exact words the ad uses. Mark each one "must-have" or "nice-to-have". [paste job description]

2. Compare it with your resume

Here is my resume. For each requirement above, quote the line from my resume that best shows it, or write NOT SHOWN if nothing does. Do not guess. [paste resume]

3. Reword only what is true

Rewrite only the bullets you quoted, so they use the job ad's wording. Keep every job title, employer, date, number, and software name exactly as written. Do not add any skill, tool, or result that is not already in my resume. Show the old and new version of each bullet.

4. Rewrite the summary

Write a 3-line summary for this role using only facts from my resume. If a must-have is NOT SHOWN, leave it out instead of implying it.

What to watch out for

Before sending, read every line and ask: could I explain this in an interview? Why invented experience backfires.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT tailor my resume to a job description?

Yes. Give it the job description and your resume, ask it to match wording to the ad's requirements, and tell it not to add anything that is not already on your resume. Then check every line yourself before you send it.

What is the best prompt to tailor a resume with ChatGPT?

Work in steps: first list the job's requirements, then match each one to a real line on your resume, then reword only those lines. Ask it to keep titles, employers, dates, numbers, and software names unchanged and to show old and new versions.

Will an ATS notice my resume was written with AI?

Applicant tracking systems mainly match keywords and read structure. The bigger risk is a human reader spotting generic phrasing or a claim you cannot back up in the interview, so keep the wording specific and true.

Why use Resume Tailors instead of a chatbot?

It does the same rewording in one step on your own file, shows every change for you to approve, refuses to invent experience, and gives you a Word or PDF download. It is free and needs no account.
